Prospects for the Development of Seaweed Cultivation in Lobuk Village, Sumenep, Madura

Lobuk Village, Sumenep Regency, Indonesia is a village that develops seaweed and makes seaweed cultivation an economic activity. According to Widyastuti (2013) Seaweed cultivation is a form of community empowerment determined by several factors. First, the cultivation area is quite extensive along the regional coastline. Second, pollution-free waters allow products to be accepted by markets sensitive to heavy metal content. This community service activity was carried out through collaboration between Airlangga University, Lincoln University, Trunojoyo Madura University, Wiraraja University Sumenep, Bluto District Apparatus and the Sumenep Government in observing the development of seaweed potential—qualitative approach method with field studies to understand the actual conditions of seaweed farming. Field studies were carried out to obtain an up-to-date picture of the condition of seaweed farmers in Lobukpetani Village to identify strength factors that can be utilised, such as the availability of land, capital and labour, as well as identify weaknesses faced (weaknesses) such as low product quality and environmental problems. There is a need to identify opportunities such as collaboration with other parties to increase market share. Apart from threats, seaweed farmers must pay attention to competition, price fluctuations and natural disasters. Seaweed is a marine plant that has many benefits for health, food and industry. Madura Island has a geographical bonus; government intervention in resource training and facilitating seaweed farmers can have a tremendous effect. The government can increase the potential of seaweed. There is a need for further education and development of seaweed cultivation in Bluto Village to help the development of seaweed.
